THE COMFORT ZONE
We’ve all heard that life happens outside our comfort zone.
But venturing outside your comfort zone is just so….uncomfortable.
Then why do it?
Stepping outside your comfort zone grows and stretches your skills, and if done consistently, you’ll reach your goals faster and perhaps pursue even bigger goals.
IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE
You don’t have to go that far outside your comfort zone. Psychologists call this a challenge-skill balance, which means that there is a direct relationship between how difficult a task is and our ability to do it.
If something’s too difficult, it becomes overwhelming and frustrating. But if a task is too easy, we get bored.
The right balance of task to ability helps us grow, but it’s not so difficult that we want to give up before we start. 1
In hard numbers, you’ll need to choose a task that’s roughly 4% 2 harder than what you’re used to. Which is great because you don’t have to make huge leaps and bounds, but 4% compounded over time leads to big gains.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR GETTING OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE
- Healthy eating: Let’s say that your daily calorie intake is 2,000 calories and you want to start eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. Four percent of 2,000 calories means you want 80 of those calories to come from fresh produce. That’s one small apple.
- Getting active: If you’ve been walking daily for 10 minutes and want to slowly increase your activity time by 4%, you’ll extend your walking time by just 24 seconds. Want to start running? See here.
- Running: Want a faster marathon time? If your current marathon time is 4 hours and 30 minutes, you’ll need to reduce your time by roughly 11 minutes. You’ll go from running a marathon pace of 10:18 min/ mile to a 9:53 min/ mile pace.
