Gary McPherson, from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, studied the musical development of 157 children. These kids were learning various instruments in different schools.
The research examined the link between the children’s motivation, desire to practice, and their achievements nine months later.
Even before their first music lesson, the children were crystal clear in their intentions and expectations.
Some projected they’d play for a year or two before trying something else (short-term commitment).
Others said they’d play into their teens (medium-term commitment).
And others projected to stay with their instrument into adulthood (long-term commitment).

The children who stated a short-term commitment scored lowest in achievement and performance. It didn’t matter if they practiced a little, or a lot. This group had external reasons for playing their instrument. (i.e. Their friends also played an instrument.)
Those who committed to sticking with their instrument until they were teenagers saw better results.
But the students with long-term commitment and internal motivation earned the highest achievement levels and practiced more.
