10 Half Marathon Race Day Tips
You’ve been preparing over several months for your half-marathon but are you prepared for race day?
Follow these half marathon race day tips to ensure that your race day flows smoothly.
Get familiar with the race course by studying the course map. Pay attention to elevation changes, turns, and water/ aid station locations.
If you can train on the race course, you’ll recognize subtle road changes, learn to manage your energy, and increase your confidence on race day.
Plan and organize your race day gear the night before and remember to stash extra safety pins!
Chilly race day morning? Stay toasty with old, disposable clothes and toss them aside after you warm up.
Bring cash for emergencies.
Don’t try anything new – food, clothes, shoes – on race day. Your first half marathon isn’t the time to experience stomach issues or blisters.
Rainy day? Stay dry beforehand by grabbing a trash bag to use as waterproof cover.
Don’t worry if you can’t sleep the night before. One sleepless night won’t affect your performance because you’ll be alert from the day’s excitement.
Trust your training, stick to your race plan, and ignore those running faster than you.
Take advantage of water stations. Plan your approach to the water station by making eye contact with the volunteer, then grab a cup of water, and keep moving for the other racers running behind you.
Avoid getting drenched by flattening the cup lip to sip water. Once finished, you can either toss your cup into the trash can, or throw it on the ground. And, always check to see if you (or your cup) will be crossing another racer’s path.
If you’re not using the water station, it’s a good idea to run on the opposite and less crowded side of the road.
At some point in the race, your brain is going to convince you to stop running, but don’t give in! It’s your first half marathon and you’re going to have a great race.
