Stream of Consciousness Writing Exercise, aka Morning Pages
Author Julia Cameron popularized this stream of consciousness writing exercise, called ‘Morning Pages’ in her book, The Artist’s Way.
Morning Pages are three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing, done first thing in the morning.
There’s no wrong way to do Morning Pages – they are not high art. They are not even “writing.” They are about anything and everything that crosses your mind – and they are for your eyes only.
Do not overthink Morning Pages: just put three pages of anything on the page.
Morning Pages aren’t intended for anyone else’s reading pleasure, so you can release yourself from the self-consciousness of writing.
Unloading your thoughts onto three handwritten pages takes about 30-minutes. And in that half hour, you might solve a pressing problem, or uncover new creative ideas. One thing is certain – you’ll clear your mind and create mental space.
Morning pages get us to the other side: the other side of our fear, of our negativity, and of our moods.
